Rule of thumb, not an official spec: the TikTok layout differs a little between phones and app versions, and ads add a button at the bottom.

Why the safe zone matters

On the For You feed, TikTok draws its interface on top of your video. The caption, your username and the sound name take up the bottom of the screen, the like, comment, save and share buttons sit on the right, and the Following and For You tabs sit at the top. Anything you put there, like a subtitle, a price or a face, can end up hidden or hard to read.

Tips for text and subtitles

  • Put titles and hooks in the upper middle of the frame, below the tabs. That is where eyes land first.
  • Keep burned-in subtitles above the caption area, roughly in the middle third of the screen.
  • Leave the right side clear of logos and prices; the buttons cover it.
  • Write long captions with the key line first, because only the first line or two show before “more”.

Frequently asked questions

What is the TikTok safe zone?

It is the middle part of the screen that the TikTok interface does not cover. The caption, username and sound sit at the bottom, the like, comment and share buttons on the right, and the tabs at the top. Text and faces outside the safe zone can end up hidden.

What are the TikTok safe zone dimensions?

On a 1080 x 1920 frame, keep important content out of roughly the top 240 pixels, the bottom 420 pixels, the right 140 pixels and the left 60 pixels. That leaves a safe area of about 880 x 1260 pixels. TikTok's layout differs a little between phones and app versions, so treat these as a rule of thumb.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The preview runs in your browser with a local copy of the file. Nothing is sent to Tikio or anyone else.

Is the safe zone different for TikTok ads?

Ads add a call-to-action button and a "Sponsored" label at the bottom, so leave a little more room at the bottom for ads. Check the preview in TikTok Ads Manager before you launch.

Does the safe zone work for Reels and Shorts too?

Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts cover similar areas at the bottom and the right, so a video that fits this safe zone usually works there as well. Each app differs slightly, so check the preview in each one.
